Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he feels sympathy for Dimitar Berbatov after the emergence of Javier Hernandez has limited the amount of playing time for the Premier League's top goalscorer.
Berbatov has been in splendid form this season and remains a potent weapon when afforded an opportunity - grabbing the crucial late winner against Bolton after coming on as a substitute before hitting the opener in the win over Fulham.
But Sir Alex has been blown away by the rapid development of Hernandez, who has become an instant hero at Old Trafford.
"I think it's unfair in the respect that Dimitar is a fantastic player," conceded the boss. "I think the reason is obvious but the emergence of Hernandez in the last couple of months has been startling.
"He's improving all the time and getting stronger so it's very difficult to leave a player out in that respect when he has that kind of form.
"Every manager and every player in the country has faced that at some point of their career, when another player emerges to challenge you.
"It's a horrible part of being a footballer and why players like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are driven to make sure their standards are very high to maintain their places because it's a great challenge footballers have."
