Sir Alex Ferguson: Time to be united

Sir Alex Ferguson has issued a rousing rallying cry to United's supporters as the season enters its critical phase.

Wayne Rooney's two-game suspension for swearing at West Ham has taken much of the media focus away from two splendid away wins in London over the past week. The striker scored four times in total at West Ham and Chelsea but will miss Fulham's visit to Old Trafford and next weekend's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

The boss believes the Reds can overcome "difficulties" such as Rooney's ban and be galvanised in response as the big fixtures continue to come thick and fast.

Sir Alex writes in United Review, the official matchday programme, "I say to our supporters and players that this is the time for us to unite and show our true colours.

"I want us to make it clear that we can rise above recent problems and that we are a club who can overcome all difficulties and attempts to knock us off our perch.

"We have done it before, and we can do it again if we pull together at this vital stage of the season as we go from one major fixture to another.

"This is the fighting spirit that makes Manchester United such a great club, and which has helped us over the line to success so many times in the past."

United's famed support could give the Reds a crucial edge over the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in the coming weeks. The manager was impressed by the vocal away following at Upton Park and Stamford Bridge and is calling for more of the same on the home front during the run-in.

"Let's make it the best atmosphere ever, with our fans and team united to make sure Old Trafford remains the fortress we need," declared the boss.

"Together we can see it through!"
