Manchester United Target Douglas Costa of Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester United's four-year pursuit of Brazilian midfielder Douglas Costa appears to have been stepped up, according to the Observer.

The Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder was spotted at Old Trafford surrounded by representatives and United officials during the Red Devils' 1-0 victory against Bolton.

The appearance could be seen as the renewal of Sir Alex Ferguson's admiration for the player almost two years after he first tried to sign him from Brazilian club GrĂªmio.

Like Ronaldinho, another former member of the Porta Alegre club, Costa is also an attacking midfielder with pace and dribbling panache who can be utilised on either wing or up front as a second striker.

It is thought, though, that securing a work visa for the Brazilian would be difficult as the 20-year-old is yet to make his full international debut despite starring for his country at Under-20 level.

Shakhtar are also believed to be keen to make a stout profit on the player, as Costa's advisers reportedly understand the club values their star at £20 million.

Costa has drawn interest from Old Trafford since he was 16, but with four years left on his contract in Ukraine, the United board would have to sanction a sizeable transfer fee.
