What The Papers Said on that day:
"United made the mountain they had to climb look like a molehill. They got their three goals with time, strength and stamina to spare on a night of drama that has seldom been equalled at Old Trafford."
The Background:
The Catalans arrived at Old Trafford with a 2-0 first leg lead of the European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final clash after United had passed up plentiful chances in Camp Nou. Few gave United hope at OT, especially with the mercurial Diego Maradona in the visitors' ranks.
The Occasion:
The Reds set about their visitors like a pack of starving dogs. Remi Moses hounded Maradona into sulking submission, Norman Whiteside and Frank Stapleton snapped away upfront and the back five remained fiercely impervious throughout. But at the heart of everything was Bryan Robson, who scored twice to see United over the line.
The Aftermath:
At full-time, hundreds of jubilant fans ran onto the pitch and Robson was carried shoulder-high. “My name was being sung and my back slapped till it hurt,” he said. “But it was one of those nights you dream about and treasure for the rest of your life.”
Manchester United for life....................................
