AC Milan's hopes of claiming an 18th Serie A title dwindled after failing to defeat Palermo

Palermo's Dorin Goian beats Christian Abbiati at the Stadio Renzo Barbera

AC Milan's title hopes were dealt a blow after the Rossoneri suffered only their fourth league defeat of the campaign at US Città di Palermo.

Massimiliano Allegri's side − whose top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimović was serving the first of a three-match suspension − had not lost in Serie A since 18 December, but never recovered after conceding Dorin Goian's tenth-minute strike when the defender was left unmarked following the visitors' failure to clear a corner.
While the victory was a welcome relief for the Rosanero, who had lost their previous five top-flight matches, Milan − who were 13 points clear of FC Internazionale on 12 December − will find themselves just two points ahead of their city rivals if the champions beat US Lecce on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, S.S. Lazio kept their UEFA Champions League aspirations alive with a 1-0 success against struggling AC Cesena. Mauro Zárate's second-minute goal proved enough to earn Eduardo Reja's charges their fourth win in six league games, which lifts them to fourth in the standings.
